A strict new captain, Raymond Holt, means trouble for the squad's carefree, yet brilliant, detective Jake Peralta. Meanwhile, Boyle repeatedly tries to ask Rosa out on a date.

Fed up with Jake's petulant attitude, Captain Holt assigns him to a mundane graffiti case. When the culprit is apprehended and turns out to be the Deputy Commissioner's son, Peralta and the Captain struggle over how to proceed. Meanwhile, Gina's psychic friend frightens Boyle.

Stuck in a run of unsolved cases, Jake fears he's in a slump, while the other detectives worry about his losing streak rubbing off on them. Meanwhile, Santiago enlists Rosa and Gina when Holt asks her to speak to at-risk youths. Meanwhile, Terry need Boyle's help on a secret project.

When Boyle takes lead on a possible homicide, Jake's attraction to the medical examiner delays the autopsy report. Meanwhile, Amy calls on Terry's artistic skills when the sketch artist falls sick.

Jake is close to solving a case when a detective from Special Crimes takes over, just in time to claim the credit. Meanwhile, Captain Holt and Gina trick Terry in to returning to a shooting range.

Jake bets Captain Holt that he can steal his Medal of Valor before midnight on Halloween. Meanwhile, Amy is unhappy when she's forced to dress up in costume to go undercover at a Halloween party.

When Jakes arrests a suspect with little evidence, the squad has 48 hours to collect enough proof to make the charges stick or they must release him. Meanwhile, Charles judges a pie contest when Rosa and Gina argue over the best pie in town, and the Captain helps Terry deal with his brother-in-law.

When Jake meets one of his heroes, Jimmy Brogan, a former crime reporter, he tries to emulate his hero's old fashioned attitudes. His infatuation with the old-style reporter ends after Jake makes some drunken comments about the precinct which Brogan sees as "on the record". Meanwhile, Terry and Charles coach Rosa on how to appear on the witness stand.

When Jake's favorite pizza place burns down, he sets out to prove the Fire Marshall wrong after Sal is accused of burning down his own restaurant. Meanwhile, a computer virus at the precinct causes embarrassment when it prints out everybody's browser history.

Amy invites the whole precinct over for Thanksgiving dinner at her apartment, but her plans go awry when Jake leaves with the Captain to catch a suspect.
