The cast and crew of Brooklyn Nine-Nine have been paying tribute to their colleague Andre Braugher, who passed away earlier this week.
The two-time Emmy award winner, best known for his roles as Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street, died at the age of 61 following a brief illness.
The executive producers of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, including co-creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur, said in a statement to Deadline, "Like everyone who was fortunate enough to know Andre, we are heartbroken by the news of his passing. He was one of the most talented dramatic actors in history, and then he decided to try comedy, and he was instantly one of the funniest people ever to do it. But even greater than his acting talent was the happiness and joy he brought to those around him. And his smile… he had the greatest, brightest, most wonderful smile. Our thoughts and love go to his beautiful, amazing family, whom he loved more than anything. We are grateful for the time we had with him."
Terry Crews, who played Sergeant Terry Jeffords, said on Instagram, "Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” Crews wrote. “This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like."
Joe Lo Truglio, who played Charles Boyle, posted on Instagram, “So many wonderful stories will be told about Andre but for now, all my love goes to his wife Ami and his three boys, who he loved very much and flew back every weekend from the show to be with. We all know how powerful an actor he was, but even more, Andre knew exactly well his most important role and was deeply proud of it. He spoke often about his sons, and knew how lucky he was to have Ami. I’m grateful to them for allowing us to share eight years with him. He was committed and passionate about the things he loved. And that voice. It laid anchor to the roughest of dialogue.”
Melissa Fumero, who played Amy Santiago, posted a behind-the-scenes picture of pair from the Beach House episode on Instagram, saying "I will remember all the advice you gave me. I will remember all the times we laughed because your laugh was one of the all time greatest laughs to have ever existed. I will remember the deep love and loyalty you had for your family. I will remember it every time I ask work to make time for me to be with my family. I will remember how you sent me pictures of Fall trees in NJ because you knew how much I missed that time of year back east. I will remember you calling me Melly Fumé. I will remember so much. I really thought I’d see you again. My deepest condolences to Andre’s family, to Ami, to the boys, and to all his friends and loved ones. It was an honor to be in your orbit for a time, Sir. May you Rest in Peace my friend."
Chelsea Peretti, who played Gina Linetti, posted on Instagram, “Love you ❤️ Will miss your dulcet tones. Forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you. Ringside seat. You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep. I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick. Is it weird that I am also grieving for what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew I would see you again. Hate that I won’t 💔”
Dirk Blocker, who played Michael Hitchcock, said on Instagram, “Fiercely intelligent, remarkably kind, supportive, generous and possessed a deep and extraordinary talent, and had even more to offer. I am devastated. I love him. The 9 years I was able to work with him and to just be in his presence was truly a blessing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.” Meanwhile, Joel McKinnon Miller, who played Norm Scully, posted a behind-the-scenes photo of Andre Braugher on Instagram. Adding, “An actor prepares… Sending love to Andre’s family and friends and all of us who had the honor of working with him.”
On Instagram, Marc Evan Jackson, who played Raymond Holt’s husband, Kevin Cozner, shared a photo of the pair on embracing on the set of Brooklyn Nine-Nine with the caption, “O Captain. My Captain.”
NBC, the broadcaster of Brooklyn Nine-Nine from its sixth season, and its sister studio, Universal Television, the show's producer, posted a statement on Instagram, "Andre Braugher was the actor that others in the profession would always aspire to be. He infused Det. Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street with both righteous ferocity and quiet dignity. In addition to his prowess as a dramatic actor, his comedy chops were also on full display as the determined and passionate Capt. Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. We will miss him tremendously.” On the official Brooklyn Nine-Nine Instagram page, they posted “Always our Captain. We love you, Andre.”, to which Terry Crews replied “Nine nine 💔”.
FOX, the network where Brooklyn Nine-Nine originally premiered and aired its first five seasons, posted on Instagram, "Everyone at Fox is devastated by the sudden loss of our friend and colleague, the incredibly talented Andre Braugher. He will most certainly be remembered for his iconic comedic and dramatic roles across both film and television, but he will be remembered mostly for his big heart, kindness and the lasting impact he made on his friends, family and fans everywhere. Andre was the heart and soul of the Nine-Nine and will forever be our Captain. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Andre’s family and loved ones at this time."
